Staying in Character as a Dungeon Master on Camera

Maintaining character integrity as a Dungeon Master is easier in person, where environmental immersion supports performance. Online, the boundary between game and everyday life feels thinner.

Staying in character begins with mental preparation. Before sessions, take a moment to review the emotional tone of your world. Remind yourself of key motivations driving major NPCs. Entering the session with clarity strengthens consistency.

Limit out-of-character interruptions during critical scenes. While humor and casual conversation have their place, abrupt shifts during intense moments can dilute tension.

Your visual presence reinforces commitment. When portraying a significant NPC, adopt consistent posture and expression. Hold eye contact with the camera. Avoid glancing at unrelated screens during dialogue.

In my own campaigns, integrating subtle visual cues through Faes AR helped maintain continuity between sessions. Instead of describing a character’s appearance repeatedly, I embodied aspects of their identity visually, reinforcing presence and reducing cognitive friction. Information about how it functions is available at https://faes.ar/, and the purchase page can be accessed here: https://araura.gumroad.com/l/qyoqv.

Confidence sustains immersion. Even when improvising, commit to your delivery fully. Players mirror your conviction.

Technical preparation reduces distractions. Preload assets, confirm audio settings, and ensure your setup is stable before beginning. Technical hiccups can pull you out of character quickly.

Remaining in character on camera is less about theatricality and more about focus. When your presentation aligns with narrative tone and your commitment remains steady, the digital barrier recedes.

Online play requires intention. With consistent performance and thoughtful visual reinforcement, you can inhabit your world as convincingly on camera as you would at a physical table.
